Lawrence H. Schneider, M.D., though
retired, holds the title as one of The Hand Centers' founders
and an expert in the filed of hand surgery. Born in Brooklyn,
New York, Dr. Schneider earned his M.D. at the State University
of New York in Brooklyn. After his internship at Kings
County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, he was invited to
continue there with an orthopedic surgery residency. He
was then awarded a Hand Surgery Fellowship at Columbia-Presbyterian
Medical Center in New York.
After serving as a Lieutenant Colonel
in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Schneider was appointed
Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital in Philadelphia. He served as a consultant or
attending surgeon at the State Hospital for Children and
Youth, Elizabethtown, PA; the Alfred I. Dupont Institute,
Wilmington, DE; Jefferson Park Hospital, Philadelphia,
PA; and Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. He also
served as Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and
Director of the Division of Hand Surgery at Thomas Jefferson
University.
An esteemed surgeon and educator,
Dr. Schneider was awarded the John J. Gartland Award by
the Jefferson Medical College Department of Orthopedic
Surgery in 1992, in recognition of his outstanding commitment
to resident education. He held editorial positions at
The Journal of Hand Surgery and Operative Techniques in
Orthopedics, written over 100 papers, chapters and abstracts,
and is author of the book “Flexor Tendon Injuries”.
Dr. Schneider co-founded The Philadelphia Hand Centers
in 1973, and greatly contributed to The Hand Centers’
educational mission and reputation for medical excellence.
To this day, Dr. Schneider continues to academically influence
the field of hand surgery through educating residents
and fellows.
